Often when we talk about dressing up, and outfits for special occasions, we single out dresses or skirts. And don’t get me wrong, I love a pretty dress or a flirty skirt – but, during these cooler months, I don’t always feel like wearing them. Instead, I feel like staying home in my pyjamas and indulging myself in a night of tea and binge watching some Netflix series. Occasionally, I give in to this feeling – and that means I miss out on some seriously fun nights. While I’ve never really had “fomo”, I also don’t want to snooze away my winter and miss out on important moments with friends and family. That’s why I have come up with a new take on dressing up.
What is “Dressy Casual Attire”?
Dressy casual style is basically a mixture of pieces which you’d consider your casual go-to’s with pieces that are slightly more elevated and sophisticated. So for example, my basic black jeans would be my casual go-to while the embellished top would be what elevates this look. Add in a pair of heels or a stylish pair of flats and your look will begin to have that practical-meets-dressy vibe. The best way to complete this (or any) sort of look is with accessories, so add in a great handbag, necklace, or watch to your look to really elevate the overall appearance of it.
Lately, I’ve had a slight obsession with tops with feminine embellishments. So often I find that I am dressed in extremes – a t-shirt + jeans combo one day, and a fit and flare dress the next. But this embellished blouse paired with my favourite go-to American eagle jeans seems to strike somewhere in the middle. I feel as though I am Goldy Locks when I say all this, but the truth is that these sorts of tops aren’t too fancy, nor too casual. They sit somewhere perfectly in the middle.
Dressy-casual outfits like this are great because they balance sophistication with practicality. While you couldn’t wear this to a wedding, you could easily sport this look to a dinner out with friends and family, or to a gathering at a friends house. Just remember to pack a coat and scarf to keep yourself extra-cozy during the moments you’re outdoors.
