It feels like this summer has quite literally flown by. I don’t know where the time all went! I feel like I’ve only made it out to the beach, sat on the patio, and really gotten to relish in the hot summer sun a few times. But, perhaps I feel like that because our summer here has been very fickle and all over the map. We’ve had days that were hot, sunny, and spectacular – but we’ve also had some crazy fall-like days that are full of rain and wind, burr!
It may be because of that that my mind is already preoccupied with what I’ll need for fall – the style basics that will update even summer styles to being wearable during the cooler months. While I am long gone out of school, and I really don’t need to “back to school” shop, around the last weeks of summer I do always feel like I need to grab a few essentials to get my wardrobe fall ready. I guess it is still ingrained in me from all those years I spent in school! So, whether you’re like me and well out of school – or, you’re heading back in a few weeks, here are a few pieces you should look into grabbing to make your fall style so much more comfortable (and stylish)
12 Fashion Basics Every Girl Should Own for Fall
Chambray
A denim shirt is a super practical and on-trend item to have in your closet. So, if you don’t have one already than you may want to invest in one for the fall. Denim shirts are great worn as a stylish button-up, under sweaters (the peek-a-boo collar is always chic), or over tanktops and tee-shirts for a little extra layering. There are so many stylish ways to wear a chambray, which is why it’s such a style essential.

Vests
I’ve been obsessed with vests over the last few years, and already I am excited to break out a few of my favourite knit vests this coming fall. Fall is one of the most stylish times of year. The layers you have to work with in your fall outfits allows you to build up a look that is totally one of a kind, and there is no item I love more in an fall outfit than a stylish knit vest.

Scarves
As soon as the weather cools, my favourite style accessory always is a scarf. Scarves can add a bit more colour and “pop” to an outfit just like jewelry does, but it also provides a bit more warmth.

Jeggings
Let’s get honest, who really wears just plain old denim anymore? Jeggings are the new thing – they are comfortable, easy to wear, and look just like our old favourite pair of denim. At the end of the day, the only real difference between our jeggings and our old jeans is the comfort factor – while we used to have to work in a pair of jeans, now we can buy them already ready to wear comfortably. If you need to sit a lot during the day (whether it be at school, or at work), you want to be sure that the jeans you wear are comfortable and that’s why jeggings are the perfect choice.

Flannel
Is there any style of clothing more “fall” than a flannel shirt? During the fall months, I tend to live in my favourite flannel button ups. Just like chambray shirts, you can easily wear a flannel button-up over tee’s and tanktops, under sweaters, or as a simple button-up. They are super versatile, super stylish, and super practical – and that’s a lot of “supers”.

A Black Blazer / Black Cardigan
During the cooler months, or even just a crisp summer night, it’s always smart to have a cardigan or soft shell blazer that you can throw over any outfit. These pieces may not be the most exciting to purchase, but they are one of the most practical items to have – and you will wear it time and time again during the fall and winter.

Sneakers
Let’s get honest – when it comes to what you wear on your feet from 9 – 5, what’s more comfortable: Heels or Sneakers? I’m voting for sneakers. If you’re still in school, than ditch the heels and try on a pair of kicks that you can walk around in for hours without getting blisters or sore feet. Or, if you’re at work, than look into some flats or mens-inspired loafers, they’ll be much easier on your feet than heels would be, and they’ll look just as great. A Striped T-Shirt
Nothing (and I mean NOTHING) is as practical in your wardrobe as a stripe t-shirt. I promise you, a basic black and white, or blue and white striped shirt will always prove to wear and pair stylishly. Rather than always opting for a basic black or white t-shirt, a striped tee will add a bit more visual interest to your outfit, and give even the most casual looks a slightly more “put together” effect.

Ankle Boots
Over the last few years, all of my tall boots have suddenly disappeared – and I’m all about ankle boots. Ankle boots are so practical to wear, and during the fall months they offer a bit more warmth than regular flats or shoes. In my opinion, they are a style essential.

A Leather Jacket
A faux leather jacket (let’s get real, there’s no reason to buy REAL leather nowadays when there are such realistic faux options) is a timeless piece that you’ll turn to time and time again. During the fall months, I always turn to my leather jackets to pull my outfit together and make it more weather appropriate. Plus, a leather jacket goes with any look – from super casual, to dressed to the nines.

A Oversized Sweater
During the colder months, I really need to convince myself to get out of my PJs and get outdoors. Honestly, 9 times out of 10, I’ll somehow talk myself and my fiancé into staying indoors for a Netflix marathon rather than having dinner out, or strolling around our neighbourhood. Admittedly, I’m a whimp when it’s cold outside. For that reason, over the last few years I have stocked up on super cozy oversized sweaters, and I’ve pretty much mastered how to wear a oversized sweater for all occasions – yes, that’s how much I love them. They feel like PJs, but appear more like that “effortlessly” stylish look that we all love – what a style win!

A Floppy Hat
Crazy hair, don’t care? Samsies. Wavy hair during the summer is great, but during the winter it’s less than fun. It gets frizzy and looks a mess 90% of the time, and that’s why I pretty much always rock a hat. A floppy hat can disguise a bad hair day, and can act as a great completer piece for an outfit – two birds, one stone!
