How to Elevate a Crop Top for a Night Out

Reading Time: 4 minutes

how to elevate a crop topoutfit details: Chicwish Tie a Bow Cropped top in Red, J Brand The Doll High Waist Bell Bottom Jean, Rose Gold Chain Necklace

Over the last year or so, I have become a huge fan of the crop top. While at first, I was hesitant to go “all in” with this “trend”, I finally caved and decided that it was not only a trend I loved – but it was also a trend I found really comfortable and flattering when styled properly.

It shocked me that my initial hesitation had been SO wrong. During the first months of seeing crop tops, I thought they’d be difficult to style, and totally out of my comfort zone. Let’s fast forward to today: here I am – an admitted avid crop top fan and sharing my tips on how to elevate a crop for an evening out… (Who woulda thunk it, right?)

How to Elevate a Crop Top

It All Comes down to Fabric, Shape, and Detailing…

When you’re picking out crop top that you’re hoping will have a dressy appearance to it, you’re going to want to pay attention to a few key things: fabric, shape, and detailing. These three elements combined create pieces that are undeniably elegant and beautiful.

When it comes to fabric, look for pieces which look expensive. These pieces don’t have to actually BE expensive (like this red crop I am wearing today, it’s only $36.47!) but choose pieces that aren’t knit, or jersey material. Instead seek out materials that offer a bit more structure or a elegant texture, such as silk or chiffon.

Shape is another element that is so important for finding a dressier crop. Look for shapes that flatter your body and make you most comfortable. For me, I like pieces that skim over me and cinch in at the waist to create a more defined waistline.

The final element you want to keep an eye out for is the detailing. While the actual look of this red crop is quite minimalist, there are a few details that make it a little more special and unique. What caught my eye about this crop was the pleat detail on the front, the exposed zipper on the back, and bow tie which cinches in the waist.

Meet in the Middle…

If you’re new to wearing crop tops and are unsure how to style them then try high waisted jeans or skirts. High waist jeans and skirts paired with crops create more streamlined looks and are very easy to wear. By pairing crops with higher waistlines you give yourself the comfort and coverage of a normal shirt.

If you want to pair your crop with some high waist jeans (like I have today!) and are looking to elevate your outfit for an evening outfit than look for denim in a darker wash. While I love light wash denim, dark denim is undeniably a bit dressier looking. In addition, a chic pair of flared or wide-leg jeans will also create a bit more of a dressed up look.

Be Matchy Matchy

One sure-fire way to style a crop stylishly is with sets. Matching sets really take all of the thought out of what to wear with a cropped shirt. There are tons of options that are both elevated and elegant. There are even some that would work from the office to the evening!

“I want to grow seeing you smiling” 💛 I s “I want to grow seeing you smiling” 💛

I saw so many powerful messages today from people sharing their "why" — the reason behind why they were there and standing as one of the "fringe". Here's a few reasons that I saw and heard:

- Why? Because I want my child to grow seeing smiles and smiling
- Why? Because I miss my family and loved ones.
- Why? Because my lived experience tells me not to trust what is happening right now.
- Why? Because I believe in our informed consent principles.
- Why? Because I believe in choice without coercion.
- Why? Because I’ve lost my job as a healthcare worker.
- Why? Because I’ve lost my business.
- Why? Because I’ve lost my home.
- Why? Because I’ve been injured.
- Why? Because I think there’s a better way forward for everyone.
- Why? Because I chose what I knew was best for me and I want everyone else to be free to do that as well.

Everyone has a unique reason why, and it’s important to take a moment to recognize and acknowledge them. Now is the time. Let's come together and be united💛

I want to be clear: I am not trying to dismiss the I want to be clear: I am not trying to dismiss the loss and illness that so many have experienced from C. It has been an extraordinarily hard two years for many, many people, for all sorts of different reasons and it is not my aim to diminish any of them. What I am trying to express is that we are at a breaking point societally.

If we continue to move forward with coercion, mandates, restrictions, and divisive passports based on fear (or a hope) then we risk setting precedents that we may not be comfortable leaning on in the future. We also risk dividing our society to such a degree that may make it difficult, if not impossible, to ever bring back together. Despite all of the debates, arguments, and comments made over the last few years, I do not believe that deep down Canadians want to live in a state of perpetual division.

If this is not the time to unite and end these mandates, when is? It is our systems that are broken, and they have been broken for a very long time. We all know this. Let's unite and fix them, and more together 💛

Creating our own peace ☮️

Nearing the end of 2021, one thing that Jer & I wanted to prioritize was creating our own peace. Life has been exhausting for the last long while and, like most people, our mental well-being suffered from the current state of Canada. We knew we needed to make some changes, add something to our lives to remove us (even temporarily, now and again) from the chaos that is now the “new normal”. So, we began making road trips around BC to find our very own home away from home. I feel immensely lucky to now have this remote sanctuary in our lives. It is somewhere we can go when life gets too overwhelming, somewhere we could live eventually if life continues to be overwhelming. In just the first few days here, I’ve already felt a shift in my mindset. I feel incredibly lucky to have this place and already it feels like home. 💖
✨Growing pains✨ . . . 2021, for many of us, w ✨Growing pains✨
. . .
2021, for many of us, was a year of growth. Some of it was painful, most of it inspiring, and all of it necessary. Sometimes growing means needing to shed the older versions of ourselves and sometimes that can be difficult or cause a loss in friendships or relationships. It can be challenging - believe me, I get it. But, anything or anyone who couldn't respect your growth then won't respect your future growth. While growth can be painful it is not nearly as painful as the dull consistent ache of feeling stuck.
