As you guys know, I recently began working from home. As a total worker bee, I initially really struggled with achieving my work-at-home balance . For example, If an email came in at 11PM, I would get up to respond immediately.
When I worked in an office, at the end of the day I would shut off my computer and wouldn’t see the emails pour in overnight, but working from home means my email is attached to my phone and the dings, pings, and lights alert me to each new message.
The problems came to the forefront quickly, as I neglected the things I need most to keep my body and mind feeling healthy.
I wasn’t going for jogs or to my workout classes, my diet was all over the map, my sleep schedule was thrown, and (more often than not) I was staying in my PJS ALL day.
The key to finding my balance and achieving balance in my life again was creating a schedule; just like if I were to be working in an office, and re-prioritizing the things I value most in my life. Realizing that I had the power to reorganize myself to allow time for the things I truly enjoy and love is what turned it all around for me.
I like feeling active and healthy, I need to respect my weekday routines, and, while I love my pajamas, I also really love picking out and planning my outfits.
Today I am talking about a few things that I do to keep my body and mind aligned, and am sharing tips for how you can achieve balance in your life too. Scroll through to read more!
How I Achieve Work-at-Home Balance
A Daily Treat
One thing I like to do for myself each day is treat myself to something I love. For me, coffee is my daily treat.
Sure, I can go without my coffee, but I choose not to because it adds something special to my early mornings spent working in front of my computer.
While it may seem like a small thing, it’s something that makes each morning feel a bit more special and calming.
Since having the Harrington Rod surgery (for Scoliosis) when I was 13, core health and strength has been a very important part of my overall health.
When I discovered Pilates at 14, I felt as though I had finally found something that was great for my core, spine, and my mental health.
Just like how many people find Yoga soothing, Pilates has always calmed my nerves and given me that quiet time to re-center my mind and get my thoughts in order.
When I first began working at home, my Pilates routine suffered. I was feeling more frazzled and stressed than I had been in a long time.
It didn’t take me long to realize that setting aside some time each day for my Pilates routine was something I needed to do in order to take on my daily tasks in a more enthusiastic and positive way.
Sea Wall Walks
I am lucky to live in an incredibly beautiful city, and I love walking around it. Specifically, I love walking the sea wall. Walking has always been one of those activities I like to do for a bit of quiet time.
While it’s not the most strenuous workout in the world, it is one that stretches your muscles out and allows you to get out into the fresh air.
Just like Pilates, walking is just as important for my physical health as it is for my mental health. I get some of my best ideas while strolling around!
Getting back into my daily walks was something I forced myself to do recently. While it’s difficult to tear yourself away from other responsibilities, sometimes it’s the best thing you can do for yourself.
I don’t know if there is anything that throws off my balance more than eating poorly. It affects my stomach, my mind, and my overall motivation.
One thing I do to ensure that I stay on track health-wise is plan my meals for the week each Sunday. I have lots of fruit and veggies during the week, which makes me feel like I am improving my health with every bite I take!
Hiking, & Daily Fitness
Fitness has always been important in my life, and there’s nothing more necessary for my health (and my sleep schedule) than going for a challenging hike or joining a workout class.
To ensure I am always feeling as active as possible, I have established a fitness routine that I do not sway from. I go to a minimum of two workout classes a week, I try to do at least one hike per week, and I workout on my own the other two days.
Keeping this schedule ensures that I wake up everyday feeling my best, and energized to take on anything that comes my way.
Makeup & Style
I have always enjoyed playing dress up.
There’s something motivating about putting on a outfit you love, and gussying up with your favourite beauty products.
While I love having pyjama days here and there, and occasional “makeup free Mondays”, I also have always truly enjoyed using my style to express myself.
Working from home can really throw my style and beauty game off balance, which is why I try to make it priority to get up each day and style myself as though I am heading to the office.
I mean, you never know when spontaneous plans or meetings may arise anyways, right?
I don’t know if you guys noticed, but when I first began working from home, my blog really suffered. Since I wasn’t delegating my time properly, I wasn’t able to really focus on my blog.
Since my blog is my passion project, not allocating any time to working on it was really discouraging for me. My blog fuels me, and allows me to feel creative. Without this creative outlet, I lose my balance and get out of sync.
So… How Can You Achieve Better Life-Work Balance?
First of all, prioritize!
Sit down with a pen and paper and write out what matters to you most. When you visualize the things you want to accomplish on paper, you get more motivated to make time for them – and achieve them.
If you’re wanting to make more time for your fitness, balance your work-life schedule, create a meal plan, or embrace your own sense of style more, then make it happen! I know you can, because I could.
The truth is, it’s only when you feel totally in-sync with your core, that you can harness your greatest potential.
The real key to achieving balance in your life is knowing that you have the power to mould your own life.
Being InSync is that special state when body and mind are aligned, we are in touch with our core, and we are driven from within to achieve our full potential. The positivity that radiates from being InSync will benefit all aspects of a person’s life – at work, in personal relationships and in all-important relationship with oneself.
