15 Must-Have Items for a Comfortable and Chic Wardrobe

Reading Time: 5 minutes
Not sure how to achieve a comfortable and chic wardrobe for fall and winter? Today’s style list outlines everything you need to be stylish and cozy.

15 Must-Have Items for a Comfortable and Chic Wardrobe

Comfortably Chic Fall and Winter Style Essentials

My favourite sorts of looks always combine comfort and style; and it’s my belief that you should never have to sacrifice one for the other. I love casually combining my polished midi skirt with a more laid back t-shirt, or styling my favourite slouchy boyfriend, mom, or retro-style jeans (like these Levi’s 501 Jeans!) with a more prim style of blouse.  Especially during the fall and winter seasons, I feel comfort is key to a look and always maintaining an element of practicality is essential.  Also during the cooler seasons, I feel it’s important to invest in an oversized purse or side bag to carry around a few extra layers – just in-case the weather takes a turn for the worse.

15 Must-Have Items a Comfortable and Chic Wardrobe

1. Over-sized Knit Sweaters

In my opinion, there’s no piece of clothing that’s more essential to your winter style than a super cozy oversized knit sweater.

I live in oversized sweaters during this time of year. I style when with button ups and slacks for work, leggings when I am at home, and jeans if I am going out with friends.  Even though they are oversized and slouchy, you can really style them to look quite cute and chic.

2. Leggings and/or Leather Leggings

During the fall and winter months, I love to wear leggings and leather leggings. They are the most comfortable bottoms you can wear. And, they tuck into boots nicely.

When I am at home, I’ll often just wear simple black leggings. Occasionally, I’ll wear them out if I have a oversized sweater on. Normal leggings are quite casual so when I am going out but I still want legging-level comfort, I’ll wear my leather leggings instead.

I’ll still wear an oversized knit or large shirt (to cover the bum area), but the leather look of the leggings just steps the look up a bit over all.

3. Slouchy Jeans

Another style essential, year-round, is a pair of slouchy jeans.

Slouchy denim looks great when paired with a crisp tee, a cozy knit, or even a button up blouse.  They are super versatile which makes them a total style essential.

I personally have been obsessed with styling my slouchy denim with fitted black turtle-necks and black ankle boots lately.

5. A Peacoat

Alright – during this time of year ANY coat is a style essential. It doesn’t have to be a peacoat. You just have to have something that will layer well and keep you warm.

But for the sake of fashun, a peacoat is a style must. It looks crisp, chic, and smart while also keeping you warm. It’s a win-win.

6. Thinner Layering Knit Sweaters

Have you ever gone outside in your sweater and coat, feeling cozy, just to go inside and find yourself sweating bullets? Yeah, we’ve all been there.

Layering your knits will help you be able to be comfortable whether you’re out in the cold, or in the cozy indoors.

Lately, I’ve been finding myself reaching for my Zara basics sweater more than any other – I love how comfortable they are and how beautifully they layer up.

7. Cardigans

Another must-have has to be cardigans. In particular, I love oversized style cardigans or better yet – coatigans. I live in “coatigans” at work. They are cozy, and coaty, and officey and I’m into it.

Whether you are into cardigans or coatigans doesn’t really matter – so long as it’s something knitwear/sweatery that can be worn overtop of your thinner layering knits.

You’ll wear your cardigans and coatigans time and time again during the fall and winter season. Plus, they’ll make your more summery t-shirts and tanks more wearable and cozy during the cooler months.

8. Ankle Boots

Yes, we’re getting into the boot essentials section of this list – and to start it… ANKLE BOOTS!

I love most styles of boots, but I pretty much wear ankle boots every single day. Ankle boots (that are flat or low heeled) go stylishly and practically both with my work slacks and my more casual jeans, and they are super comfortable.

Ankle boots can be styled in a ton of different ways. Whether you’re into flats, like me, or prefer a tall heel, you’ll find that your ankle boots are super versatile.

9. Knee High Boots

Another style of boot you’ll get a lot of wear out of are knee-high boots.

Knee-high boots are great to wear over jeans, jeggings, and leggings. They are a classic boot style that are super versatile and cozy.

10. Over the Knee Boots

In the last few years, over the knee boots have really become a fall and winter style staple.

They make your summery dresses and skirts wearable during the cooler months. They look great with more winter-ready sweater dresses. And, they add another cozy and stylish layer when wearing leggings or leather leggings.

11. Sweater Dress

It’s just been in the last few years that I’ve really come to appreciate the sweater dress. I used to never wear them, but now I just love how cozy and stylish they can look during this time of year.

I tend to go for more slouchy shapeless knit dresses that I then add a belt to in order to have more definition at the waist. I love pairing my sweater dresses with knee-high or over the knee boots so that I am extra cozy.

12. Scarves

I wear scarves every single day. Seriously, every day. I don’t go to work, to the store, out with friends – anywhere – without having a scarf on. To me they are the ultimate chic and comfortable wardrobe / accessory.

Scarves are such a great style focal-point. They can be patterned, printed, and textured which makes them a great go-to when you’re wearing simple outfits. Plus, they keep you nice and warm and that’s pretty dang essential during this time of year.

13. Toques

Toques have really become a style essential for me these last few years.

I used to only wear toques if I was going skiing, or doing something in the snow. Now, they are my go-to when I am going anywhere and its cold out.

I love toques that have a bit of extra fabric in the back that folds down. I just think it looks so casually cute.

14. Wide Brim Hat

Wide brim hats look so incredibly chic and they are a great way to keep your noggin nice and cozy.

I tend to wear simple hats in neutral shades – black, grey, beige, or sometimes burgundy – but I have to say that lately I have really loved the idea of a blush hat!

15. Cross Body Bag

I’m not a huge purse person. I know a lot of people love super fancy expensive bags – I am just not one of them.

Instead, I’d rather a bag that’s practical. I typically go for something that I can just throw over my shoulder and not really worry about.

While not all of my bags have zippers, I usually do prefer bags that have a zipper to keep my wallet and miscellaneous items safe.

I also tend to go for small or medium size bags that will just fit my essentials  – wallet, lip-balm, maybe a scarf. I don’t like anything too small (if it can’t hold a normal size wallet… What’s the point of it?) or anything too big and bulky.

“I want to grow seeing you smiling” 💛 I s “I want to grow seeing you smiling” 💛

I saw so many powerful messages today from people sharing their "why" — the reason behind why they were there and standing as one of the "fringe". Here's a few reasons that I saw and heard:

- Why? Because I want my child to grow seeing smiles and smiling
- Why? Because I miss my family and loved ones.
- Why? Because my lived experience tells me not to trust what is happening right now.
- Why? Because I believe in our informed consent principles.
- Why? Because I believe in choice without coercion.
- Why? Because I’ve lost my job as a healthcare worker.
- Why? Because I’ve lost my business.
- Why? Because I’ve lost my home.
- Why? Because I’ve been injured.
- Why? Because I think there’s a better way forward for everyone.
- Why? Because I chose what I knew was best for me and I want everyone else to be free to do that as well.

Everyone has a unique reason why, and it’s important to take a moment to recognize and acknowledge them. Now is the time. Let's come together and be united💛

I want to be clear: I am not trying to dismiss the I want to be clear: I am not trying to dismiss the loss and illness that so many have experienced from C. It has been an extraordinarily hard two years for many, many people, for all sorts of different reasons and it is not my aim to diminish any of them. What I am trying to express is that we are at a breaking point societally.

If we continue to move forward with coercion, mandates, restrictions, and divisive passports based on fear (or a hope) then we risk setting precedents that we may not be comfortable leaning on in the future. We also risk dividing our society to such a degree that may make it difficult, if not impossible, to ever bring back together. Despite all of the debates, arguments, and comments made over the last few years, I do not believe that deep down Canadians want to live in a state of perpetual division.

If this is not the time to unite and end these mandates, when is? It is our systems that are broken, and they have been broken for a very long time. We all know this. Let's unite and fix them, and more together 💛

Creating our own peace ☮️

Nearing the end of 2021, one thing that Jer & I wanted to prioritize was creating our own peace. Life has been exhausting for the last long while and, like most people, our mental well-being suffered from the current state of Canada. We knew we needed to make some changes, add something to our lives to remove us (even temporarily, now and again) from the chaos that is now the “new normal”. So, we began making road trips around BC to find our very own home away from home. I feel immensely lucky to now have this remote sanctuary in our lives. It is somewhere we can go when life gets too overwhelming, somewhere we could live eventually if life continues to be overwhelming. In just the first few days here, I’ve already felt a shift in my mindset. I feel incredibly lucky to have this place and already it feels like home. 💖
✨Growing pains✨ . . . 2021, for many of us, w ✨Growing pains✨
. . .
2021, for many of us, was a year of growth. Some of it was painful, most of it inspiring, and all of it necessary. Sometimes growing means needing to shed the older versions of ourselves and sometimes that can be difficult or cause a loss in friendships or relationships. It can be challenging - believe me, I get it. But, anything or anyone who couldn't respect your growth then won't respect your future growth. While growth can be painful it is not nearly as painful as the dull consistent ache of feeling stuck.
