Vancouver Fashion Week Trend Report

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Though I was not able to attend all of Vancouver Fashion Week, I was able to make my way to the fashionable week-long event on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This was the first year I’ve been able to attend VFW and I must say, what an amazing thing to get to experience! Quickly, I learned that VFW 2014 (on the runway and the street) was all about carefree bold style – the kind that makes me swoon, and shop!

SHEER:
Nearly every collection at VFW was filled with pieces that were either entirely sheer or had sheer paneling integrated into the look in some way. I love sheer clothing as it adds an unexpected element to a look! These are a few of my favourite wearable pieces from this trend:

CUT-OUT DETAILING
Cut Out detailing has been one of my favourite trends this past summer and I am so thrilled the trend is here to stay.   I love how the look of a simple white t-shirt can be elevated by intricate cut-outs, and how a classic LBD is updated by perforated details. Here are a few affordable and wearable pieces so you can rock the spunky trend too:
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? ‘http’ : ‘https’;if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + ‘://’ + ‘widgets.rewardstyle.com’ + ‘/js/shopthepost.js’;d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === ‘object’) if(d.readyState === ‘complete’) {window.__stp.init();}}(document, ‘script’, ‘shopthepost-script’);

BLACK AND WHITE:
During my first night at VFW it was already very clear that clean pairings of black and white were going to be taking over the runway. I’ve always been a huge fan of simple black and white combinations so I’m thrilled that one of my most loved (and most worn) looks is so on-trend this year!
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? ‘http’ : ‘https’;if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + ‘://’ + ‘widgets.rewardstyle.com’ + ‘/js/shopthepost.js’;d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === ‘object’) if(d.readyState === ‘complete’) {window.__stp.init();}}(document, ‘script’, ‘shopthepost-script’);

CROPPED:
 Though originally I was skeptical of the crop-top trend, over the last few months I’ve discovered that they can style quite beautifully and even elegantly when styled with the correct pieces. In particular, I’ve loved pairing cropped tops paired with high-waist pieces to achieve a playfully polished look.  My original hesitation to the trend was from memories of the 1990’s (high tops and low jeans) but by pairing a crop with a higher waist skirt or pair of trousers, the look has more of a pretty “peek-a-boo” effect.

“I want to grow seeing you smiling” 💛 I s “I want to grow seeing you smiling” 💛

I saw so many powerful messages today from people sharing their "why" — the reason behind why they were there and standing as one of the "fringe". Here's a few reasons that I saw and heard:

- Why? Because I want my child to grow seeing smiles and smiling
- Why? Because I miss my family and loved ones.
- Why? Because my lived experience tells me not to trust what is happening right now.
- Why? Because I believe in our informed consent principles.
- Why? Because I believe in choice without coercion.
- Why? Because I’ve lost my job as a healthcare worker.
- Why? Because I’ve lost my business.
- Why? Because I’ve lost my home.
- Why? Because I’ve been injured.
- Why? Because I think there’s a better way forward for everyone.
- Why? Because I chose what I knew was best for me and I want everyone else to be free to do that as well.

Everyone has a unique reason why, and it’s important to take a moment to recognize and acknowledge them. Now is the time. Let's come together and be united💛

I want to be clear: I am not trying to dismiss the I want to be clear: I am not trying to dismiss the loss and illness that so many have experienced from C. It has been an extraordinarily hard two years for many, many people, for all sorts of different reasons and it is not my aim to diminish any of them. What I am trying to express is that we are at a breaking point societally.

If we continue to move forward with coercion, mandates, restrictions, and divisive passports based on fear (or a hope) then we risk setting precedents that we may not be comfortable leaning on in the future. We also risk dividing our society to such a degree that may make it difficult, if not impossible, to ever bring back together. Despite all of the debates, arguments, and comments made over the last few years, I do not believe that deep down Canadians want to live in a state of perpetual division.

If this is not the time to unite and end these mandates, when is? It is our systems that are broken, and they have been broken for a very long time. We all know this. Let's unite and fix them, and more together 💛

Creating our own peace ☮️

Nearing the end of 2021, one thing that Jer & I wanted to prioritize was creating our own peace. Life has been exhausting for the last long while and, like most people, our mental well-being suffered from the current state of Canada. We knew we needed to make some changes, add something to our lives to remove us (even temporarily, now and again) from the chaos that is now the “new normal”. So, we began making road trips around BC to find our very own home away from home. I feel immensely lucky to now have this remote sanctuary in our lives. It is somewhere we can go when life gets too overwhelming, somewhere we could live eventually if life continues to be overwhelming. In just the first few days here, I’ve already felt a shift in my mindset. I feel incredibly lucky to have this place and already it feels like home. 💖
✨Growing pains✨ . . . 2021, for many of us, w ✨Growing pains✨
. . .
2021, for many of us, was a year of growth. Some of it was painful, most of it inspiring, and all of it necessary. Sometimes growing means needing to shed the older versions of ourselves and sometimes that can be difficult or cause a loss in friendships or relationships. It can be challenging - believe me, I get it. But, anything or anyone who couldn't respect your growth then won't respect your future growth. While growth can be painful it is not nearly as painful as the dull consistent ache of feeling stuck.
