As sad as I am to admit this, there’s been a definite and undeniable change in the weather lately. I’m still clinging to the idea that summer isn’t completely over, but our weather has been saying otherwise. It’s been cooler, rainier, and this passed weekend it was even stormy. These dreary sorts of days call for looks that layer up easily so that during the moments of sporadic sunshine you can keep cool – and during the blustery cold one you can stay cozy and warm.
This past Saturday I headed out in the early AM to grab a coffee with an old friend. Since I had read that the weather was supposed to take a turn for the worse, I decided to wear pieces that I could easily layer and build upon. Neutral outfits like these are always ones I love. While there’s something fun about outfits with bold colour and playful prints, there’s something to also be said about a great neutral look. Sometimes, simplicity speaks louder. And sometimes, simplicity is also easier and more effortless to layer upon! And on the topic of layers, today I wanted to share a few of my favourite basics that always build together to create a simple & chic look.
Maybe it’s just me, but when it’s cold and rainy out (or heck, even just really windy out) there’s nothing I turn to faster than simple and classic basics; Think casual t-shirts, comfortable denim, easy to walk in flat boots, and a rain resistant coat. These items always layer and pair together easily to create chic looks that can build up to be cozier for those unpredictable days. My button-up peplum, grey jeans, and ankle boots are a perfect example of a look that quickly was able to be built upon for a warmer + weather-resistant look. After walking out of the coffee shop, I simply slipped on a cardigan, jacket, and grabbed my umbrella and I was ready to take on the nasty storm that greeted me. One thing I forgot though was a hair tie, and on really blustery days, I have to say those are pretty darn essential too!
Cozy Knits: When it’s cold out, there’s nothing I want more than to snuggle up in a cozy knit. I love the look and the comfort of oversized comfortable sweaters – and I pretty much live in them when it’s cold out.
White / Black / Striped Shirts (long + short sleeve): In the summer, when I’m not sure of what to wear I always just easily turn to my comfortable t-shirts. And in the cooler months, I always have at least two basic long sleeved shirts. While they may not be the most exciting things to buy, they will be some of your most worn and useful pieces in your wardrobe since they layer well under oversized button ups and cardigans.
A Waterproof Jacket: A great coat is essential during the cooler seasons, and on style that seems to never go out of style is a classic trench coat. Look for one in a water resistant material so that even on the rainiest of days you’re able to stay dry.
Comfortable Denim / Jeggings: Regardless of the time of year, I think having a great pair of denim is pretty essential. But especially during the cooler seasons, having jeans that can easily be worn and tucked into boots is important. I personally love jeggings for that “comfort” factor.
Boots: When it’s cold and rainy out, toss your cute flats & strappy sandals to the side. A pair of boots (and a cozy pair of socks) will help keep your feet warm and dry even on the coldest of days.
A Cozy Scarf: I’m a scarf fiend during the cooler months. I hate having my throat exposed and cold when it’s gross out – I always feel like it contributes to me getting sick – so having a cozy scarf is an absolute must-have for me.

love your style =)
